About ASTRAEA- The Astraea programme seeks to research, develop and validate the necessary technologies, systems, facilities and procedures to promote and enable safe, routine and unrestricted use of UASs
ASTRAEA Conference- ASTRAEA Conference, 24th June 08
ASTRAEA Projects- The Astraea programme has been divided into a series of projects, each managed by a private sector partner.
Regulatory Framework- Regulatory projects determine that UAS systems can be considered for routine safe operation in non-segregated airspace
Good Airmanship- Assessing acceptable levels of UAS Good Airmanship to ensure adequate safety levels and a framework for developing Certification and Operational Rules
Route to Compliance- Developing a route to compliance through investigation of the means of achieving clearance of UAS system designs
UAV Operations and Procedures- Framework for UAS operation, with reference to current manned aircraft rules
Integration with Operating Environment- Analysing the issues relating to the integration of UASs into the existing and emerging Air Traffic Control infrastructure
Demonstration- Projects demonstrating the technology being developed
UAS Propulsion and Power- Assessing, in the absence of a pilot-in-the-loop, the functionality and interface requirements between a typical propulsion system and a modern aircraft management system
UAS Affordable processes- Developing affordable and qualifiable processes for the design and manufacture of UAS airframes and engines
Technology- Information on the technology issues that the Astraea project manages
Ground Operations & Human System Interaction - This project is looking at technologies and procedures that will be required on the ground in order to fly a UAS in a routine manner in UK airspace
Communications and Air Traffic Control- This project is examining what data a UAS will need to send and receive and is researching the communications technology needed to handle this
UAS Handling- This project is researching and developing technology to enable a UAS to perform all these functions autonomously
Adaptive Routing- Developing the technology to enable an aircraft to modify its own flightpath and adapt its route in reaction to a variety of situations
Collision Avoidance Systems- Engaging with stakeholders to develop user requirements for UASs and to establish a performance baseline
Multiple Air Vehicle Integration- Joining the majority of ASTRAEA sub-projects to ensure the safe operation of autonomous systems within combined airspace
Prognosis & Health Management- Providing technology and systems to enable UASs to monitor their own state, perform real-time prognosis and to make decisions on how best to assist optimal mission performance
Decision Modelling- Developing a robust and clearable system that will provide an on-board decision-making capability
ASTRAEA Partners- Responsibility for delivering ASTRAEA as a key element of the National Aerospace Technology Strategy has been handed to the Aerospace Innovation and Growth Team
Log-in Contact us Glossary Help- General and technical help on using the site
Home- ASTRAEA is a pioneering £32 million aerospace programme which is addressing key technological and regulatory issues in order to open up non-segregated airspace to unmanned autonomous aircraft
